Born in Auriesville, New York, son of James Little and Susan Young. Early life; brief stay in Nauvoo, Illinois, with his relatives (Brigham, Joseph, Phineas H., and Lorenzo Young were his uncles); experiences as a non-Mormon in Nauvoo; efforts to find work in Nauvoo; enlistment into the United States Army and participation in Mexican War; baptism into LDS Church, 1848; arrival in Salt Lake Valley, 1849; marriage to Mary Jane Lytle; difficulties with the Indians in Utah Valley, 1850; mission to England, 1856, where he served as second counselor to Orson Pratt; return to United States; mission to the eastern United States, 1875; plural marriages to Anna Matilda Baldwin and Elizabeth Tulledge.
